Dual meet points
| Place | Individual event | Relay |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 5 | 5 |
| 2nd | 3 | 0 |
| 3rd | 1 | 0 |
Every individual event is worth 9 points and every relay 5. With 14 individual events and 3 relays, a girls or boys meet has 141 points, so 71 wins it outright. A team that takes 1st, 2nd and 3rd gets all 9.
Example: Lincoln against Roosevelt
- 4x800m relay: Roosevelt wins. Roosevelt 5.
- 100m hurdles: Lincoln, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Roosevelt. Lincoln 5 + 3 = 8, Roosevelt 1.
- 100m: Roosevelt, Lincoln, then a Roosevelt and a Lincoln runner tie for 3rd. They share 1 + 0, so Roosevelt 5½ and Lincoln 3½.
- 1600m: Lincoln, Roosevelt, Roosevelt, Lincoln. Lincoln 5, Roosevelt 4.
After four events: Lincoln 16½, Roosevelt 15½. Open this example in the scorer.
Double-dual and triple-dual meets
When three teams meet but score as duals, you write down one order of finish for each race. For each pair of teams, take only those two teams' athletes, in order, and score them 5-3-1 as if the third team wasn't there. In a triple-dual every pair is scored; in a double-dual only the host against each visitor. This is common practice rather than a rule in the track rulebooks; the clearest written version is the Delaware DIAA double-dual and triple-dual scoring procedure (written for swim meets, same pairing). Pick either one under Scoring and the scorer keeps every dual's total from the same places.
So if Jefferson wins the 4x800m relay ahead of Lincoln and Roosevelt, Lincoln still wins its dual against Roosevelt 5-0 in that relay. Open a triple-dual example.
Questions coaches ask
How many points is a dual track meet worth?
Each individual event is worth 9 points (5-3-1) and each relay 5. The total depends on your event list: 14 individual events and 3 relays make 141 points per girls or boys meet.
Do relays score 5-3 in a dual meet?
Not in the usual table: only the winning relay scores, 5-0, and each school has one scoring relay. Some leagues use their own numbers, so check your league rules and use Custom points if they differ.
What is a double dual track meet?
Three teams compete together but one team, usually the host, is scored as a separate dual meet against each of the other two. The two visitors are not scored against each other. In a triple-dual all three pairs are scored. This is common practice; the Delaware DIAA wrote the method down for swim meets.
Can one team sweep an event?
Yes. If one team takes 1st, 2nd and 3rd it gets all 9 points. If only one team has pole vaulters, it scores 5, 8 or 9 points for one, two or three of them.
