        The steps

        1. For each event, list the finishers from all four teams in order. Leave out exhibition athletes.
        2. Give 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points to the first five. In relays give 6, 4 and 2 to the first three, counting only each school's first relay.
        3. If athletes tie, add the points for the places they cover and share them.
        4. Add each team's points. Keep girls and boys separate.

Each individual event is worth 16 points and each relay 12.

        Example: four teams, four events

        1. 4x800m relay: Madison, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson. Madison 6, Lincoln 4, Roosevelt 2.
        2. 100m hurdles: Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln. Lincoln 6 + 1 = 7, Roosevelt 4, Jefferson 3, Madison 2.
        3. 100m: Roosevelt wins, Jefferson and Madison tie for 2nd and share 4 + 3, Lincoln is 4th. Roosevelt 6, Jefferson 3½, Madison 3½, Lincoln 2. Only four ran, so the point for 5th isn't given.
        4. 1600m: Madison, Madison, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson. Madison 10, Lincoln 3, Roosevelt 2, Jefferson 1.

After four events: Madison 21½, Lincoln 16, Roosevelt 14, Jefferson 7½. Open this example in the scorer.

        Questions coaches ask

How many places score in a 4 team track meet?

Five places in individual events (6-4-3-2-1) and three in relays (6-4-2).

Can a 4 team meet be scored as dual meets?

Yes, if the coaches agree. Choose Triple-dual and every pair of teams is scored as its own 5-3-1 dual from the same places: six duals for four teams. That is common practice, written down by the Delaware DIAA for swim meets.

How do you score a 5 team track meet?

The default table for five teams is 8-6-4-2-1, with relays 8-6-4-2. Add a fifth team and the scorer picks that table for you.

What if two relays from the same school finish in the top three?

Only the school's first relay scores. The second one is skipped and the next school's relay takes the place and its points.

Point tables from the Oregon OSAA 2026 Track and Field Plan Book (NFHS scoring chart) (individual points by number of teams), Southern Maine Middle School Indoor Track League rules, Mat-Su Borough School District middle school track and field rules, Saint Paul middle school track and field guidelines, Section XI (NY) Spring Track and Field handbook, MHSAA (Michigan) coaches guidebook, KSHSAA (Kansas) 2025-26 track and field manual, TSSAA (Tennessee) middle school track regulations and the UIL (Texas) 2025 district and area track meet director manual. Ties: NFHS Rule 6-3 as printed in SDHSAA "Breaking ties" (NFHS Rule 6-3) and the UIL tie-breaker procedures. Double-dual and triple-dual: common practice, written down in the Delaware DIAA double-dual and triple-dual scoring procedure (written for swim meets, same pairing). One scoring relay per school: Section XI handbook, Saint Paul guidelines and Southern Maine league rules. Your league or meet director has the final word on scoring.
